charleston

Hi all, Nick will have his own votes here but my two front running choices for those of you who want to stay in Charleston either on Wednesday or Thursday night (or even over the time off), I recommend a few places.

Love the historic Planters Inn (pictured above) this is where you will find the unmatched food of the Peninsula Grill (a donnelly family favorite). I will re-visit cuisine especially the Peninsula grill in an upcoming post (at one point this is where my reception was to be held).

A Charleston Place is the more opulent place in town. High falutin' and fancy.

Planters Inn Reservations (p): (800) 845-7082.
A Charelston Place Reservations (p) 800-611-5545.

golfin'

the most challenging course @ kiawah is the ocean course (and the most beautiful). the clubhouse just underwent a renovation compliments of Robert AM Stern with full panoramic views of the atlantic, a must for the serious golfer and a sip of something afterwards. PGA is already signed up this year...

wildlife.

kiawah is a nature conservatory. expect to find some of these fine creatures in thier natural habitat. (above: white pelicans + american alligators) bobcats, bucks, and deer. there are also a great amount of birds and snowy egrets.

Kiawah, a brief history.

One of the most carefully preserved barrier islands in the world, Kiawah Island was named for the Native American tribe that hunted and fished in the area during the 1600s. The tribe’s chief, Cassique, led colonists to Charlestowne Landing on the Ashley River where they built the first English settlement in the New World in 1670. In 1699, George Raynor, a purported pirate, was granted title to the island by the Lords Proprietors. Kiawah Island stayed in Raynor's family until 1719, when it was purchased by John Stanyarne. Over the next 50 years, Kiawah Island SC passed throughout Stanyarne’s family until it finally feel into the hands of the Vanderhorst family, who held ownership of the island for 200 years.
