kiawah sundown

one of the many...

where the "journey" idea originated.

...from dan eldon's book THE JOURNEY IS THE DESTINATION. he developed scrapbooks a la peter beard in his young life. somewhat like our postings here, just a collage of things we love.

Dan Eldon, who was killed in Somalia in 1993, is shown in 1992 in Africa. Photographs from Mr. Eldon's journal went on view in "The Journey is the Destination," a permanent exhibition at the Candela/Decker gallery in Manhattan.

the gators of kiawah.

Per Ellen's request, let's talk about the Gators of Kiawah.
Kiawah Island is home to a very healthy population of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). Alligators can be seen in almost all of the 183 brackish and freshwater ponds which are interspersed throughout the island. Most alligators seen will be between 3-8 feet in length, though larger alligators up to 11 feet are present in some areas of the island. Alligators are cold-blooded which means that they cannot self-regulate their body temperature as humans do. For this reason, alligators are most active during the spring, summer, and fall. They will often be seen basking on pond edges in the sun in an attempt to warm their body temperature, especially during colder weather.

SC FLAG.

what it all means...Asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety in the fall of 1775 to design a flag for the use of South Carolina troops, Col. William Moultrie chose a blue which matched the color of their uniforms and a crescent which reproduced the silver emblem worn on the front of their caps. The palmetto tree was added later to represent Moultrie's heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island against the attack of the British fleet on June 28, 1776.

surfin...

it's not my forte, NICO will have the lowdown (especially on a neighboring island, FOLLY BEACH). Still, in my research of Kiawah, note the following lowdown from SURFLINE.

"These are exclusive residential/resort beaches to the south of Charleston. Kiawah can get good surf on north and northeast swells, particularly at Sandy Point on the north end of the island. The south end of the island, particularly Seabrook, can occasionally be blocked from southeasterly swells by offshore sandbars, from outflow from the North Edisto River and from northeast swells by Sandy Point." Chris Dixon/SURFLINE

Best Tide: mid to high
Best Swell Direction:All directions. E hurricane and NE wind/groundswell can have lots of power.
Best Size: 3 to 10 feet
Best Wind:SE, E or NE will give wind waves and chop. W for rapidly cleaning but dropping conditions. Perfect-O-Meter:
2 to 5 (1=Lake Erie; 10=Jeffreys Bay)
Bottom: sand and some oyster shells
Ability Level:beginner to advanced
Bring Your:shortboard, longboard, funboard
Best Season:late summer, early fall, early spring Access:
Private developments with little access. Surf anywhere if you're staying here, though. You can get onto Kiawahs' beach at Beachwalker County Park.
Crowd Factor:light
Bicep Burn:2 to 8. Hard NE and SE give strong currents. (1=1ft Waikiki; 10=15ft Ocean Beach) Poo Patrol: 2. A little runoff pollution after it rains. (1=clean; 10=turds in the lineup. Hazards:sharks, bluefish, and oyster shells

(don't worry, nick's perfect day to follow).

If you are staying in Chaz on Thursday night...

Jump off the plane + roll into town. Lunch @ S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad) with a glass of Cava + light Ahi Tuna salad. Check into the Planters Inn

or Charleston Place. Walk around the square and stroll into the old cemeteries bearing the bones of Civil War Era folks (i.e., John Calhoun). Snake your way onto the old Cobblestone streets and check out the amazing homes, peeking into the famous secret gardens along the way.

A sunset sip of wine or a cold beer at the Vendue Inn.Dinner at Peninsula Grill or McGradys. If you are in a fun mood, take a Ghost Tour (or just listen to one in passing).

Bedtime at your leisure (look out for the ghosts).
Morning is brunch at Hominy Grill and off to KIAWAH.

If you arrive on Friday...

Lunch at S.N.O.B. or Jestine's Kitchen for the down home meal of fried green tomatoes, chicken + sweet tea. Quick post-lunch stroll around Rainbow Row or a drive around the bumpy cobblestone roads...Off to KIAWAH.

OR ...just land + off to Kiawah for a beachside lunch @ the Sanctuary.

kiawah (ariel).

One of the most carefully preserved barrier islands in the world, Kiawah Island was named for the Native American tribe that hunted and fished in the area during the 1600s. The tribe’s chief, Cassique, led colonists to Charlestowne Landing on the Ashley River where they built the first English settlement in the New World in 1670.

In 1699, George Raynor, a purported pirate, was granted title to the island by the Lords Proprietors. Kiawah Island stayed in Raynor's family until 1719, when it was purchased by John Stanyarne. Over the next 50 years, Kiawah Island SC passed throughout Stanyarne’s family until it finally feel into the hands of the Vanderhorst family, who held ownership of the island for 200 years.
